Opera Discussion: Voices Lifted

Thursday, April 15 at 7 p.m. ONLINE

UCPL and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis invite you to join us for Voices Lifted: Two Centuries of Black Composers of Opera, an online discussion led by Opera Theatre docent Diane McCullough. During this presentation, McCullough will discuss Black composers from Joseph de Boulogne to William Grant Still to Terence Blanchard, and the work they created in the face of prejudice and Jim Crow laws. The presentation will explore the musical forces that place these composers squarely at the heart of the development of an "American" sound in many genres of American music: folk, pop, jazz, classical.

This is the first in a series of online programs presented by UCPL and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, all of which are free and open to all. Send an email to reference@ucitylibrary.org to receive an email invitation to the Zoom event to take part in the live question-and-answer sessions for this and the other programs in the series. Thiese events will also be live-streamed onto the UCPL Facebook page and YouTube channel.
